Google and OSA Foundation announce Subsea Optical Fiber Communications school for summer of 2019

Feb. 12, 2019
To be held in Finland, the school is intended for early-stage researchers and engineers and PhD or Master's students.

The Optical Society (OSA) and Google are joining forces to hold the first Subsea Optical Fiber Communications 2019 International Summer School this summer (4 to 10 August, 2019) at Holiday Centre Huhmari, a lakeside resort in Polvijärvi, Finland.

To ensure that its various datacenters around the globe are connected as efficiently as possible, Google has great interest in training the next generation of developers, deployers, and maintainers of long-distance fiber-optic communications, and 95% of the world's intercontinental electronic communications rely on the subsea network of optical fiber cables and systems. Attendees will go through a thorough learning process of building a modern global communication network, with a focus on submarine system design, submarine powering, cable technology, planning, marine operations, and maintenance. Topics include:

--The history and future of submarine cables
--Basics of coherent digital optical communications
--Architectures and management of submarine networks
--Submarine fiber and cable technology
--System planning and deployment
--Marine and maintenance

Leading experts from companies such as Acatel Lucent, FaceBook, Google, and Subcom will present and teach at the OSA Foundation Subsea Optical Fiber Communications 2019 International Summer School, with the intended students being early-stage researchers and engineers and PhD or Master's students looking for a new field of opportunity in technology.

Applications for the inaugural Summer School are due 30 March 2019. Applications will be reviewed in April and invitations to those selected to attend will be sent late April 2019.
