MIRTHE receives proposal for NSF Center for Mid-IR Medical Systems (MIMeS)

Dec. 11, 2013
Princeton, NJ--MIRTHE has received a planning grant proposal from the NSF to develop a new I/UCRC Center on Mid-Infrared Medical Systems (MIMeS).

Princeton, NJ--A planning grant proposal from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop a new Industry & University Cooperate Research Program (I/UCRC; http://www.nsf.gov/eng/iip/iucrc/) Center on Mid-Infrared Medical Systems (MIMeS; http://www.mirthecenter.org/mimes/index.aspx) has been received by professor Claire Gmachl, director of the Mid-InfraRed Technologies for Health and the Environment (MIRTHE) Center at Princeton University.

MIMeS will be dedicated to the development and deployment of engineering systems using mid-infrared photonic technologies in medical applications.

MIRTHE is hosting a breakfast meeting to discuss this opportunity with prospective members for the new I/UCRC, which, if approved, may receive funding in the Fall of 2014, just prior to the final year of NSF funding for MIRTHE.

The objectives of this breakfast meeting are to communicate information about the proposed new Center, gather industry interest, and recruit/consolidate new member commitments. In order to submit an I/UCRC proposal, applicants must demonstrate a requisite number of membership commitments for the first two years of the new Center. NSF has also stipulated that the proposed new Center may not detract from MIRTHE's current membership, so the meeting will discuss with existing members how this proposed new Center fits into MIRTHE's sustainability plan.

The MIMeS breakfast meeting will be followed by the one day OSA-MIRTHE workshop on Precision Monitoring of Human Metabolism. Both meetings will be held on February 17, 2014 at Princeton University. Due to space limitations at Prospect House, each member may designate one representative to the invitational breakfast. Additional member representatives are welcome to attend the OSA-MIRTHE workshop, which will be held in Princeton’s Carl Fields Center at Prospect Avenue and Olden Street. More details will be available as the date draws nearer.

If you have any questions regarding MIMES, or the events planned for February 17th, please contact MIRTHE industrial liaison Bernadeta Wysocka at (609) 258-2043 or [email protected].
