Ilminster UK--Optical components and systems manufacturer Gooch & Housego has entered into an agreement to acquire EM4 Inc, (Boston, MA). Completion is likely to occur towards the end of January 2011.

EM4 designs and manufactures optoelectronic components and sub systems. Its products include lasers, detectors and high frequency receiver or transmitter electronics.

In its statement regarding the acquisition, Gooch & Housego said it sees the acquisition of EM4 as strengthening the Group's position in the aerospace & defence sector. There are some significant benefits in addition to the ability to cross-sell EM4 products to the Gooch & Housego worldwide customer portfolio and vice versa.

The synergy of EM4 technology and Gooch & Housego's existing fiber optic capabilities will enable the Group to provide a powerful offering for key customers, the company said. This will be a key factor enabling Gooch & Housego to progressively migrate from the largely component-level product set of today, increasingly supplying modules and sub-assemblies in the future. Until now EM4 has been somewhat limited by size and financial position, integrating it into G & H will significantly increase customer confidence.
