Ultrafast fiber lasers combine the compact size, ruggedness, and excellent spatial-mode quality and stability of fiber lasers with the femtosecond-duration pulse outputs of ultrafast lasers. Achieving high average power with good mode quality in ultrafast fiber lasers and amplifiers has led to their expanded use in both science and industry.
