Fiber optic technology, optimized for the data center environment, will play a critical role in fully realizing the potential of data center networks. This presentation will review some of the problems faced by conventional data center networks (including scalability, power consumption, and management). We then discuss the industry-wide transformation to new network architectures which are flatter, converged, integrated, automated, and optimized for end-to-end applications. Photonics technologies including wavelength multiplexing, active cables, and silicon photonics will be positioned to address the problems of modern data networks and facilitate the transition to new network infrastructures.
