  May 9, 2008--In another example of the growing use of lasers and photonics for consumer applications, Bird-X (Chicago, IL) has developed a compact green laser system to combat the expense, unsightliness, and disease associated with birds and their droppings.
• Coherent introduces first fiber-based high-power picosecond laser for industrial applications
  May 8, 2007, San Jose, CA--At CLEO, Coherent, Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) launched their first fiber-based laser--a high-power picosecond laser for micromachining.
• Bookham acquires laser controller from Precision Photonics for New Focus product line
  May 5, 2008, San Jose, CA--Bookham has acquired the LB1005 High-Speed Servo Controller product line from Precision Photonics Corporation (PPC). Through the New Focus product line, the LB1005 will be available immediately to the scientific laser community, adding to the company's established line of tunable and single- frequency lasers.

• ThruVision introduces terahertz system to 'see' concealed items under clothing at extended outdoor ranges
  March 11, 2008, Oxford, England-- ThruVision, a spinout company of the Science and Technology Facility Council Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL), has developed an imaging technology that can "see" explosives, liquids, narcotics, weapons, plastics and ceramics hidden under clothing from 25 m. The T5000 passive terahertz imaging system should drastically improve security at high-profile sites and uniquely, at outdoor venues such as sporting arenas.
• Luna announces the Phoenix 1000 tunable laser based on the former Iolon "Apollo" laser
  March 7, 2008, Blacksburg, VA--Luna Technologies announced its Phoenix 1000 tunable laser at OFC/NFOEC 2008. Luna's microelectromechanical systems (MEMS)-based, external cavity laser is based on the former Iolon 'Apollo' class of tunable lasers and offers low noise and precise tuning capability over the C-band. Luna Technologies is a division of Luna Innovations (Roanoke, VA).
• Avensys Tech more than doubles monthly FBG shipments
  February 21, 2008, Montreal, QC, Canada--Avensys Corporation announced that Avensys Tech, a division of its wholly owned subsidiary Avensys Inc., a manufacturer and distributor of fiber-optic components and instrumentation for environmental monitoring, surpassed the mark of 11,000 fiber Bragg grating (FBG) units shipped in a single month, during the month of January 2008.
• Furukawa America to launch wide-area plasma fiber splicer at OFC/NFOEC
  February 21, 2008, Peachtree City, GA--According to a story from Business Wire, Furukawa America will introduce its new FITEL series of optical fiber splicers featuring three-phase plasma technology at OFC/NFOEC next week in San Diego, CA. Jointly developed by The Furukawa Electric Company and 3SAE Technologies, the FITEL S184 is the first splicer ever to use three-phase plasma technology utilizing three electrodes, for improved splicing quality.
• OSRAM Opto Semiconductors introduces fine binning for white LEDs
