Nextreme raises $13 million in financing
August 6, 2008--Nextreme Thermal Solutions (Durham, NC), which makes microscale thermal and power management products for the photonics and electronics industries, today announced securing $13 million in Series B financing.

Innolume secures Series C funding to ramp production and market its quantum dot lasers
August 5, 2008--Innolume (Dortmund, Germany and Santa Clara, CA), provider of quantum dot (QD) laser diodes and modules covering the 1000 nm to 1320 nm optical spectrum, secured a Series C round of financing for $13.4 million dollars. The round was led by S-Group Capital Management Limited (SGCM) with Applied Ventures, LLC joining as a new investor.

LG-Nortel acquires Novera Optics; invests in optical Ethernet
August 5, 2008--LG-Nortel (Seoul, Korea), a joint venture of LG Electronics and Nortel established in 2005 that provides telecommunications equipment and network solutions, closed the acquisition of Novera Optics (Santa Clara, CA), a developer of fiber-optic access solutions that extend high-speed carrier Ethernet services from optical core networks to customer premises.

U.S. Air Force awards Raytheon $31.6 million contract for Paveway II laser-guided bombs
August 4, 2008--Raytheon Company (Tucson, AZ) was awarded a $31.6 million U.S. Air Force competitive contract for Paveway II laser-guided bomb components for fiscal year 2008. The Paveway system features an onboard guidance system called the computer control group, which guides the unit to a target illuminated by an external laser source. Raytheon has delivered more than 250,000 Paveway II weapons to the U.S. and more than 35 allied nations for use on 25 different aircraft.

Laser Focus World and OIDA to hold "green" optics conference, OPTOmism
August 4, 2008--The photonics-industry trade publication Laser Focus World (Nashua, NH) and the Optoelectronics Industry Development Association (OIDA; Washington, DC), a not-for-profit association that serves as the nexus for vision, transformation, and growth of the photonics and optoelectronics industry, will hold a new conference and exhibition, OPTOmism: Photonics for the Green Revolution, to be held at the Santa Clara Convention Center in Santa Clara, CA, May 18-20, 2009.

Intevac Photonics awarded DoD contract for Raman spectroscopy systems
August 1, 2008--Intevac Photonics, a division of Intevac (Santa Clara, CA), announced that its DeltaNu business unit was awarded a $1.029 million contract from the Department of Defense (DoD) to develop advanced Raman spectroscopy systems for both military and civilian applications for detection of toxic material and pathogens. Under this year-long contract, new capabilities for ultra-sensitive detection and detection at long distances will be developed.

Laser Photonics completes largest applications lab in North America
August 1, 2008--Laser Photonics (Lake Mary, FL) completed its 65,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art laser application processing lab where clients and potential customers can send their product as samples to be processed by a specific laser system. This lab will eventually include over 20 laser systems and Laser Photonics will now be able to process customer samples within a week for applications in cutting, marking, and deep engraving using CO2 and fiber lasers with power levels up to 5 kW.

Palomar Technologies achieves management buy-out
July 31, 2008--Palomar Technologies, provider of precision automation equipment and contract assembly services for microelectronics, announced that Palomar management has bought out the original investor group that spun the company out of Hughes Aircraft in 1995. Local management, already with Palomar for many years, now owns the company.

Lockheed Martin agrees to acquire Aculight
July 29, 2008--Lockheed Martin Corporation (Bethesda, MD) entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Aculight Corporation (Bothell, WA). Aculight is a privately held company primarily focused on providing laser-based solutions for national defense and aerospace customers. The new business unit will report to Lockheed Martin's Maritime Systems & Sensors business in Akron, OH.

Goodrich acquires assets of Recon/Optical
July 29, 2008--Goodrich Corporation (Charlotte, NC) signed an agreement with Bourns (Riverside, CA) to acquire the Chicago Aerial Industries (CAI) and Pacific Optical Division (POD) assets of Recon/Optical (ROI; Barrington, IL and Riverside, CA), a provider of low-to-medium altitude airborne reconnaissance cameras and optical products for the homeland security and military market. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
