Thin-film and organic photovoltaic manufacturing to reach 29 GWp
September 15, 2008--A report by NanoMarkets predicts that manufacturing capacity of thin-film and organic photovoltaics will grow to 29 Gigawatts at peak sunlight by 2015.

QPC Lasers completes DoD contract; demonstrates first high-power surface-emitting eye-safe lasers
September 12, 2008--QPC Lasers (Sylmar, CA), developer of high-brightness, high-power semiconductor chip-based lasers, successfully completed its initial Department of Defense (DoD) contract to develop and deliver high-power eye-safe surface-emitting diode pumps for directed-energy weapons applications. The Company has been invited to submit a proposal for a much larger follow on contract.

Trumpf intends to purchase the entire share capital of SPI Lasers

Rofin-Sinar acquires majority stake in Nanjing Eastern Laser Company
September 9, 2008--Rofin-Sinar Technologies (Plymouth, MI and Hamburg, Germany), developer and manufacturers of laser sources and solutions, will acquire 80% of the share capital of China-based Nanjing Eastern Laser Company (NELC) in two separate transactions. Jointly established by Nanjing Sanle Group (China) and SIDA Corporation (U.S.) in 1993, NELC has over two decades of experience in the Chinese laser market and has maintained close cooperation with Rofin-Sinar.

Airborne Laser achieves 'first light' firing onboard ABL aircraft
September 9, 2008--The Boeing Company, industry teammates, and the U.S. Missile Defense Agency achieved a major milestone in the development of the Airborne Laser (ABL) missile defense program by firing a high-energy chemical laser onboard the ABL aircraft for the first time during ground testing at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

SPIE Boulder Damage Symposium to highlight thin-film laser resistance competition
September 5, 2008--Results of a thin-film laser damage competition at the SPIE (Bellingham, WA)-sponsored Boulder Damage Symposium this month will provide perspective on how the industry is doing with the development of high laser resistance coatings. The annual event marks its 40th year in 2008, and will be held September 22-24 at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) facility in Boulder, CO.

Edmund Optics celebrates 15 years in China
September 5, 2008--Jeremy Chang, Managing Director of Edmund Optics (EO; Barrington, NJ) China, announced that festivities to celebrate Edmund Optics' 15 years of local service in China are in the planning stages with an anniversary celebration scheduled in early 2009. Edmund Optics' China office opened its doors in October 1994 under the direction of Robert Edmund and Henry Bai.
