2008 Innovationspreis winners receive awards
October 3, 2008--Winners of the 2008 Berthold Leibinger Foundation Innovation Prize received their awards last month during a standing-room-only ceremony at Trumpf headquarters in Ditzingen, Germany. For 2008, the Berthold Leibinger Stiftung presented a total of four awards and a "special prize."

DILAS Diodenlaser forms new industrial laser business unit
October 3, 2008--Laser manufacturer DILAS Diodenlaser GmbH (Mainz, Germany) formed a new business unit, DILAS Industrial Laser Systems. The independent business unit within DILAS Diodenlaser GmbH will focus on developing and manufacturing turnkey diode laser systems, driven by the success of its COMPACT Series fiber-coupled systems with power levels up to 500 W.

DOE invests $17.6 million in photovoltaic initiative
October 2, 2008--The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded US$17.6 million to six early-stage photovoltaic technology projects, part of the Solar America Initiative.

Laser instrument on Phoenix Mars Lander detects snow falling from Martian clouds
September 30, 2008-- A laser instrument on NASA's Phoenix Mars Lander designed to gather knowledge of how the atmosphere and surface interact on Mars, detected snow from clouds about 2.5 miles above the spacecraft's landing site. Data show the snow vaporizing before reaching the ground. Spacecraft soil tests have also provided evidence of past interaction between minerals and liquid water, processes that occur on Earth.

Northrop Grumman delivers production-line Vesta II solid-state laser to Air Force
September 30, 2008--Northrop Grumman Corporation delivered a compact, stand-alone, 15 kW high-power, solid-state laser developed for the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico. Called Vesta II, the laser was a sole source add-on to the Joint High Power Solid State Laser (JHPSSL) program contract and leverages Northrop Grumman's scalable technology architecture.

Penn State Materials Research Institute develops near-infrared method for breast cancer detection
September 29, 2008---A new imaging method for breast cancer has been developed by a team of scientists from Penn State using encapsulated fluorescent molecules in calcium phosphate nanoparticles and non-toxic near-infrared imaging.
