CLEO/QELS & PhAST shows "can do" research attitude
May 16, 2008--In the Wednesday morning, May 7th CLEO/QELS Joint Plenary Session, the importance of a "can do" attitude for any researcher was summed up well by Ursula Keller, head of research for the Institute for Quantum Electronics at ETH Zurich who was presented the Joseph Fraunhofer Award/Robert M. Burley Prize for her contributions to the development of ultrafast lasers and semiconductor mode locking.

SID announces winners of 2008 Display of the Year Awards
May 12, 2008--The Society for Information Display (SID; San Jose, CA) announced the winners of its 13th annual Display of the Year Awards (two awards in three categories), honoring those companies that are making advances in providing consumers with a superior viewing experience. The awards will be presented to the winners as part of Display Week 2008: The SID International Symposium, Seminar & Exhibition, taking place May 18-23, at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Spectrum Detector and NIST receive FLC award for excellence in technology transfer
May 12, 2008--Don Dooley, president of standard and custom detector manufacturer Spectrum Detector (Lake Oswego, OR), and John Lehman of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST; Boulder, CO) received a 2008 Technology Transfer Award from the Federal Laboratory Consortium (FLC; www.federallabs.org) for their efforts to bring an optical TRAP detector into the commercial marketplace. They were selected, along with 20 other recipients, out of over 300 national labs.

May 9, 2008--The Optical Society of America (OSA; Washington, DC) and New Focus (San Jose, CA), a Bookham brand, announced that Richard Sandberg, from JILA and the University of Colorado at Boulder, is the winner of the 2008 OSA - New Focus/Bookham Student Award, which recognizes student researchers who exemplify the skills critical to scientific achievement: excellence in research, presentation, and leadership.

Gooch & Housego receives second award in 2008 from LLNL
May 9, 2008--Gooch & Housego (Ilminster, England) was recognized for a second time in 2008 by Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) for a Vendor Appreciation award crediting its performance in the growth and fabrication of crystals for the National Ignition Facility (NIF) at LLNL.

May 2, 2008--The Photonic Applications, Systems and Technologies (PhAST) Conference and Laser Focus World magazine are pleased to announce that Coherent has been selected as the recipient of this year's PhAST/Laser Focus World Innovation Award for its OPSL-577-3, the twin embodiment of technical and application innovation in exploiting the wavelength and power scalability of optically pumped semiconductor laser (OPSL) technology.
