  • Battelle acquires optical materials and millimeter wave technology from Optimer Photonics
    February 22, 2008, Columbus, OH--Battelle announced that it has recently acquired the intellectual property and other assets of Optimer Photonics, including 14 U.S. patents, several international patents, and an additional 12 pending applications. Optimer Photonics was formed in 2001 to commercialize the electro-optic waveguide components developed at Battelle for the telecommunications industry.
  • WPI receives gift from IPG Photonics to enhance teaching and research
    February 21, 2008, Worcester, MA--Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) has received funds and equipment from fiber laser and amplifier manufacturer IPG Photonics Corporation (Oxford, MA), to enhance the teaching and research capabilities of the IPG Photonics Laboratory, established at WPI in 2001, in part, with support from the company.
  • Physical sciences benefit in proposed 2009 U.S. federal budget
    February 19, 2008, Washington, D.C.--According to the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), while the 2009 federal budget proposal announced this month by U.S. President George Bush includes increases for basic physical sciences and most other parts of the R&D portfolio, it keeps biomedical funding at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) flat.

  • EOS and Trumpf announce patent license agreement with MCP on laser sintering
    February 15, 2008, Krailling, Germany--EOS GmbH Electro Optical Systems and Trumpf Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH + Co. KG (Ditzingen, Germany) have signed an agreement with MCP Tooling Technology (Stone, United Kingdom) and MCP-HEK Tooling GmbH in Germany. Under the agreement, both MCP companies receive a non-exclusive license for certain EOS and Trumpf patent rights regarding the laser-sintering process.
  • Gemfire and Covega merge to develop next-generation integrated photonics
    February 15, 2008, Fremont, CA--Gemfire Corporation announced the completion of the merger with Covega Corporation (Jessup, MD), a provider of indium-phosphide and lithium niobate components and modules to the telecommunications, industrial, medical, defense, and test and measurement industries.

The investment is priced at a substantial premium to the current market price. The investment is being made by a company with whom LEI already has an existing business relationship.

    February 8, 2008, Rochester, NY--Navitar, a manufacturer and distributor of precision optics and opto-mechanical assemblies for the machine vision and digital projection industries, acquired Special Optics (Wharton, NJ), a privately owned manufacturer of optical assemblies for long-range surveillance, laser scanning, laser projection, ultraviolet, visible, and infrared applications.
