• OSRAM Opto Semiconductors opens Hong Kong headquarters
  April 21, 2008, Santa Clara, CA--OSRAM, a wholly owned subsidiary of Siemens, has opened its new Asia regional headquarters of its subsidiary, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors, a specialist in semiconductor technology for lighting, sensor, and visualization applications.
• Coherent to outsource Auburn optics manufacturing operations
  April 18, 2008, Santa Clara, CA--Coherent entered into a definitive agreement to sell certain assets of Coherent's Auburn Optics manufacturing operation to Research Electro-Optics (Boulder, CO), a privately held optics manufacturing and technology company. Consistent with the asset transaction, Coherent and REO have entered into a strategic supply agreement whereby REO will provide optical manufacturing capabilities for Coherent, including fabrication and coating of optical components.
• Intellection and Bruker AXS sign strategic collaboration agreement
  April 17, 2008, Brisbane, Australia and Karlsruhe, Germany--X-ray equipment manufacturer Bruker AXS GmbH and mineral analysis company Intellection Pty Ltd have announced a new strategic alignment.
• Contract signed for ESA's Sentinel-3 Earth-observation satellite
  April 17, 2008, Paris--The European Space Agency and Thales Alenia Space today signed a contract to provide the first Sentinel-3 Earth observation satellite.
• Enablence Technologies to acquire Wave7 Optics for $10.5 million
  April 15, 2008, Ottawa, Ont., Canada--Enablence Technologies, a supplier of planar lightwave circuit (PLC) based components for the fiber-to-the-home (FTTH), metro, and long-haul telecom markets, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire all outstanding shares of Wave7 Optics (Alpharetta, GA).
• Redfern Integrated Optics secures $7.5 million in additional funding
  April 15, 2008, Santa Clara, CA--Redfern Integrated Optics (RIO), developer and manufacturer of high-performance, low-cost transmitters for the fiber-optic sensing and communication markets, secured an additional $7.5 million in funding. Led by Southern Cross Venture Partners, the round also included Tallwood Venture Capital and Jolimont Capital as investors.
• Bell Labs optical networking pioneers nominated for 2008 Millennium Technology prize

• Fiber-to-the-home connections in North America jump to 3 million
  April 9, 2008, Washington, DC--North America continues its march toward a high-bandwidth future as fiber to the home connections posted another year of robust growth, reaching nearly 3 million households, according to a study released by the Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) Council.
• LED maker Bridgelux secures $40 million
  April 8, 2008, Sunnyvale, CA--Bridgelux, a supplier of energy-saving light-emitting diode (LED) technology for high-volume, solid-state lighting markets, completed its latest round of financing, totaling approximately $40 million ($30 million of private equity investment and approximately $10 million of bank lines of credit). The funding allows Bridgelux to pursue its strategy for product development and market expansion, while continuing to drive research and development activities.
