Japanese scientists record 3-D movie of femtosecond pulse propagation (WATCH VIDEO)
November 30, 2007, Kyoto, Japan--For the first time, three-dimensional (3-D) images of femtosecond light pulse propagation have been observed and recorded by researchers at the Kyoto Institute of Technology. The continuously moving pictures are produced using holographic light-in-flight techniques and enable the temporal and spatial analysis of femtosecond pulses for improving studies of ultrafast phenomena.

3D photonic crystals could revolutionize telecom
November 23, 2007, Ludwigshafen, Germany--In a three-year EU-sponsored project, BASF is working with industry and academic partners--Hanover Laser Center, Thales Aerospace Division, Photon Design Ltd., the Technical University of Denmark and the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Telecommunications de Bretagne--to develop photonic crystals they say will revolutionize telecommunications.
-
Bath physicists use photonic crystal fiber to more efficiently create attosecond pulses
November 20, 2007, Bath, England--This week, the journal Science describes research by a physics team at the University of Bath led by Fetah Benabid that uses a special hollow-core photonic crystal fiber to send out pulses of light that last only an attosecond. The research has opened the door to what could prove to be a new sub-branch of photonics, the science of light guidance and trapping.
-
Cree XLamp LEDs to make a splash at Beijing Olympics
November 19, 2007, Hong Kong--Cree recently announced that its XLamp LEDs will provide the effects lighting for the new Beijing National Aquatics Centre.
-
Ultrafast laser to help tissue bank develop new tissue-processing approaches
November 19, 2007, Petaluma, CA and New Brunswick, NJ--Raydiance has entered into an innovative collaboration with Rutgers University and the Musculoskeletal Transplant Foundation (MTF), the largest tissue bank in the United States, to improve the science of dermal tissue processing.
-
Laser can detect decompression sickness before symptoms appear
November 16, 2007, Houston, TX--It may not rank among the top 10 causes of death, but decompression sickness can be fatal. Instead of waiting for symptoms to appear, a University of Houston professor is developing a laser-based system that can diagnose the sickness in a matter of seconds.

Remote sensing captures Earth lights at night
November 15, 2007, Darmstadt, Germany--The Rosetta spacecraft has captured striking images of Earth by night with the OSIRIS wide-angle camera.
-
Laser-perforated diamond anvils enable view of oxide glass structures
November 12, 2007, Argonne, IL--Researchers at Argonne National Laboratory have used a laser-perforated diamond cell to investigate oxide glass structures at high pressures in unprecedented detail.
-
Laser-ultrasound technique detects prostate cancer earlier
November 9, 2007, St. Ingbert, Germany--A novel diagnostic technique combines laser imaging and ultrasound to improve early diagnosis of prostate cancer.
-
Flytrap inspired lenses may lead to new adhesives, optics, and coatings
November 8, 2007, Amherst, MA--A new responsive material with lenses that snap between concave and convex could allow for the removal of superglues, wallpaper, and paints without toxic solvents; lead to adaptable optical devices or to surfaces that can change reflectivity with changing weather conditions.
