• LightPath to develop molding technologies for IR components
  April 24, 2006, Orlando, FL--LightPath Technologies was awarded a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) grant from the Naval Air Warfare Center to develop molding technologies for infrared optical components.
• Photonic Products and e2v win Queen's Awards
  April 21, 2006, United Kingdom--Photonic Products (www.photonic-products.com), laser diode specialist, has been honored for the second time with a Queen's Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category, and e2v technologies (www.e2v.com) has been recognized with its 12th Queen's Award for Enterprise, granted in the Innovation category for the design and manufacture of imaging sensors and cameras.
• Fujitsu and Mitsui launch quantum dot laser venture
  April 21, 2006, Tokyo, Japan--Fujitsu Ltd. (www.fujitsu.com) and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. ((www.mitsui.co.jp) announced that they have established a new optical device venture, QD Laser, Inc. (QDL), leveraging venture capital funding from both companies and Fujitsu's quantum dot laser technology.
• OSA calls on Congress for more investments in R&D
  April 20, 2006, Washington, DC--Members of OSA traveled to Washington, D.C. on March 28 and 29 to meet with Congressional representatives and emphasize the need for increased and balanced federal investment in research and development.
• CVI Technical Optics enhances European presence
  April 19, 2006, Albuquerque, NM--CVI Technical Optics has acquired Quality Laser Optics Ltd (QLO; Ballasalla, Isle of Man), expanding its European manufacturing capacity by more than 25%.
• Alfalight gets DARPA funding to develop high-power, high-beam-quality laser diodes
  April 18, 2006, Madison, WI--Alfalight has been awarded $4.7 million in funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in the agency's 18-month effort--entitled Architecture for Diode High Energy Laser Systems (ADHELS)--that aims to produce a multikilowatt diode-laser system.
• JDSU acquires home networking test & measurement company
  April 14, 2006, Milpitas, CA--JDSU announced an agreement to acquire Test-Um (Camarillo,CA), an industry-leading provider of home networking test instruments for the FTTx and digital cable markets. The acquisition, which creates new sales channels for Test-Um's home networking product portfolio and JDSU's existing set of field test instruments for broadband access networks, is expected to close in the current quarter. Financial terms were not disclosed.
• Adaptive Optics Associates wins Northrop Grumman laser contract
  April 14, 2006, Blackwood, NJ--Metrologic Instruments announced that the Advanced Optical Systems Division of its Adaptive Optics Associates (AOA; Cambridge, MA) subsidiary was awarded a contract from Northrop Grumman Electronic Systems (NGES; Baltimore, MD) related to the High-Precision Long-Range Laser Designator/Locator (HPLD) Program. This contract, with a total potential value of $6.5 million, supersedes a previously awarded and completed contract of $153,000.
• Agilent opens optics shop to external customers
  April 11, 2006, Palo Alto, CA--Agilent Technologies is making its precision optics design and manufacturing capability, grown for more than 35 years as an internal resource, available to external customers.
• Townes honored with science complex in his name
  April 10, 2006, Greenville, SC--A new $60 million science complex at Furman University will be named for Dr. Charles H. Townes, a 1935 graduate of the university and a current member of the Furman Board of Trustees.
