  • Corning expands LCD glass manufacturing capacity
    May 12, 2006, Corning, NY--The board of directors of Corning Incorporated approved a capital expenditure plan of $174 million to further expand its Generation (Gen) 8 size liquid crystal display (LCD) glass substrates manufacturing capacity at its facility in Shizuoka, Japan. The company had previously announced that it will ship samples of its Gen 8 size LCD glass (2160 mm x 2400 mm) from this facility in the second quarter.
  • Nano-based solar energy developer raises $7.5 million
    May 11, 2006, Santa Clara, CA--Innovalight, a privately-held firm developing low-cost, nanotechnology-based printed solar cells, has raised an additional $7.5 million in private equity financing from existing investors to accelerate the development of ultra-low cost, lightweight solar cells using a proprietary silicon ink-based technology.
  • Thermo Electron and Fisher Scientific to merge
    May 10, 2006, Waltham, MA and Hampton, NH--The boards of directors of Thermo Electron and Fisher Scientific International have unanimously approved a definitive agreement to combine the two companies in a tax-free, stock-for-stock exchange.
  • Schott Expands Optics Business in China
    May 4, 2006, Shanghai, China and Mainz, Germany--With the opening of Wuxi Unique Schott Optical Co. Ltd., the German-based technology company Schott is strengthening its optics business in China. The new company officially opened for business on April 29, 2006 in the Wuxi National High Technology Development Zone, which is located about 100 miles northwest of Shanghai in the Jiangsu province.
  • BFi OPTiLAS completes management buyout
    May 3, 2006, Evry, France--The management team of BFi OPTiLAS has executed a buyout of the company from Avnet Corporation.
  • Luminus gets $38 million in venture financing
    May 2, 2006, Woburn, MA--Luminus Devices, which has developed and commercialized a photonic-lattice light source, has closed approximately $38 million in new venture financing.
  • Laserscope acquires InnovaQuartz
    May 1, 2006, San Jose, CA--Laserscope has acquired the fiber-optic company InnovaQuartz (IQ; Phoenix, AZ) for $7.5 million in cash.
  • Powerlase expands manufacturing
    April 28, 2006, Crawley, United Kingdom--Powerlase, manufacturer of diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) lasers, is expanding operations during 2006, including occupying an extra 12,800 sq. ft. space in a new building to increase capacity threefold to cope with escalating demand from customers. The expansion follows their impressive 233% growth year-on-year and the company being listed as fifth fastest-growing venture-capital-backed company in the UK.
