June 19, 2006, San Jose, CA-- NeoPhotonics, a global supplier of fiberoptic component and module solutions for core, FTTx, and other broadband networks, has acquired LightConnect (Newark, CA) and OpTun (Santa Clara, CA).

QWIP Systems and Cantronic to combine
June 14, 2006, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, and Vancouver, B.C., Canada--QWIP Systems Inc. and Cantronic Systems Inc. will consolidate under the name Cantronic Systems Inc. ("New Cantronic"). Cantronic, an IR camera manufacturer, and QWIP, a detector and sensor manufacturer, are both eight years old. The transaction is expected to close by September 15, 2006.

SIA raises forecast for chip growth
June 7, 2006, San Jose, CA--The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) released an updated forecast projecting worldwide sales of semiconductors will grow by 9.8 percent to $249.6 billion in 2006. The forecast was revised upward from the November forecast projecting an increase of 7.9 percent to $245 billion. The SIA attributed the upward revision to stronger than expected growth in key end markets for semiconductors, most notably cell phones.

Sol-gel is a billion-dollar market
June 7, 2006, Wellesley, MA--The US market for sol-gel processing of ceramics and glass will be worth $330 million, according to a technical market report issued by BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com). The US market is expected to reach $500 million by 2011 at an average annual growth rate (AAGR) rate of 8.7%. The global market for sol-gel products in 2006 was $1 billion; this is forecasted to increase to $1.4 billion by 2011 with an AAGR of 6.3%.

June 5, 2006, Brisbane, CA--Aesthetic laser manufacturer Cutera will pay Palomar Medical Technologies (Burlington, MA) $22 million in royalties as part of a settlement agreement related to patent infringement lawsuits with Palomar.

Jenoptik opens plastic optics production center
June 2, 2006, Triptis, Germany--By changing its name to Jenoptik Polymer Systems (JPS) GmbH, Wahl optoparts GmbH is taking an important step in the new Jenoptik Group by opening a new production building for plastic optics and optical systems--the largest and most modern in Europe--in the little town of Triptis in the Federal State of Thuringia, Germany.
