  • Plenary speaker change for SPIE's Optics & Photonics conference
    July 15, 2005, Bellingham, WA--Due to an illness, Richard Smalley of Rice University (Houston, TX) will not be able to speak at the plenary for the Optics & Photonics conference in San Diego, CA from July 31st to August 4th. But SPIE has just confirmed an alternate: K. Eric Drexler, chief technical advisor to Nanorex (Bloomfield Hills, MI), who will speak on development of nanosystems that first imitate and later exceed biological capabilities for molecular fabrication.
  • SAES Getters to acquire part of Scientific Materials Europe
    July 12, 2005, Chiba, Japan--At InterOpto 2005, SAES Getters S.p.A. (Milan, Italy), the parent company of the SAES Getters Group, revealed that it will acquire a 30% shareholding in Scientific Materials Europe S.r.l (Tortoli-Arbatax, Italy), a manufacturer of solid-state laser components, including undoped and doped Nd:YAG laser rods, slabs, and Q-switches. The intent is to strengthen the SAES Getters Group's penetration of the solid-state laser material market.
  • Intel and Corning enter joint development agreement for EUV photomask substrates
    July 8, 2005, Santa Clara, CA and Corning, NY--Intel Corporation and Corning Incorporated have entered into an agreement to develop ultra-low thermal expansion (ULE) glass photomask substrates required for extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography technology. These substrates are needed to develop low-defect EUV photomasks to enable 32-nm node high-volume production using EUV lithography.
  • NeoPhotonics and Photon Technology complete merger
    July 7, 2005, San Jose, CA and Shenzhen, China--NeoPhotonics and Photon Technology have completed their merger. The combined company will be called NeoPhotonics, expects revenues to exceed $50M in 2005, has more than 1200 employees, primarily in China and the U.S., and has more than 100 customers, many of which are tier one network equipment suppliers.
  • Danaher to acquire Leica Microsystems for $535 million
    July 5, 2005, Washington, D.C. and Wetzlar, Germany--Danaher Corporation signed a definitive agreement to purchase Leica Microsystems AG from LM Investments S.a r.l. The purchase price amounts to an enterprise value of approximately Euro 450 million (US$535 million).
  • Melles Griot embarks on recycling and hazardous-materials reduction
    July 5, 2005, Carlsbad, CA--The Melles Griot Laser Group produces lasers of many wavelengths, but soon they will all be green. In an effort to conserve natural resources and restrict or eliminate hazardous substances from their products, Melles Griot plans to institute programs for recycling lasers and reducing hazardous materials.
  • Thales Laser re-positions its strategy
    June 30, 2005, Orsay, France--Thales Group (www.thalesgroup.com), a worldwide manufacturer of electronic and optoelectronic systems with 65,000 employees, is reinforcing and re-positioning its laser strategy by linking Thales Laser (Orsay, France; www.thales-laser.com) to its Device hardening Instrumentation & Safety division (DIS; Colombes, France), part of the Land and Joint Systems Business Group, to allow an even stronger position on scientific, medical and defense-related markets.
  • Toppan to expand Ichon, Korea, facility
    June 30, 2005, Round Rock, TX--Toppan Photomasks plans to expand its Ichon, Korea, facility to include new clean room space and an advanced e-beam pattern generator as well as associated support equipment for volume production of semiconductor devices at 90 nm and prototype development at 65 nm to support the growing Korean market.
  • Wiley and OSA form publishing partnership
    June 29, 2005, Hoboken, NJ--John Wiley & Sons and the Optical Society of America (OSA) have signed an agreement to publish a new co-branded series of books under a joint Wiley-OSA imprint.
  • e2v technologies wins contract to supply imaging sensors for GAIA space mission
    June 24, 2005, Chelmsford, England--e2v technologies, a developer and manufacturer of high-technology electronic components and sub-systems, has been awarded the flight-phase contract to supply the European Space Agency (ESA) with CCD imaging sensors for the primary scientific instrument on its high profile GAIA space mission. This contract is worth 14.3 million Euros (£9.6 million, $17.3 million) over the next three years.
