Shipbuilding industry is introduced to fiber lasers
August 9, 2005, Burbach, Germany--IPG Laser GmbH announced that IMG GmbH, a developer and manufacturer of shipbuilding production equipment, demonstrated IPG's 10-kW fiber laser welding 6-m and 12-m-long micro ship panels at IMG's July 11 open house for the shipbuilding industry.

Vishay plans CyOptics acquisition
August 5, 2005, Malvern, PA and Breinigsville, PA--Executives at Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. announced that Vishay Israel Ltd. has signed a Letter of Intent regarding the acquisition of the assets of CyOptics Israel Ltd., the Israeli subsidiary of CyOptics, Inc. CyOptics Israel Ltd. has a modern wafer fab in Yokneam, Israel, for the production of gallium arsenide and indium phosphide chips used for optoelectronics. Vishay has plans to develop new advanced products at this facility.

DARPA re-ups Alfalight for Super High Efficiency Diode Sources program
August 1, 2005, Madison, WI--Alfalight, Inc., which manufactures highly efficient and reliable high-power diode lasers, announced that it has been awarded $1.4 million in funding for Phase II of the Super High Efficiency Diode Sources (SHEDS) program, sponsored by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

NASA's laser imaging system inspects Shuttle in orbit
July 29, 2005, Washington, DC--In addition to cameras mounted on the ground, NASA will conduct detailed in-orbit surface inspections of the space shuttle Discovery using their Orbiter Boom and Sensor System (OBSS), a 50-foot-long robotic arm extension that houses a Laser Dynamic Range Imager (LDRI), a Laser Camera System (LCS), and an Intensified Television Camera (ITVC).

ADC to acquire Fiber Optic Network Solutions
July 25, 2005, Minneapolis, MN--ADC has agreed to acquire Fiber Optic Network Solutions (FONS), a manufacturer of high-performance passive optical components and fiber optic cable packaging, distribution and connectivity solutions. ADC will pay $172 million in cash for FONS, net of any FONS debt at the time of closing. The transaction is expected to close during the next 30 to 90 days.

Kodak projects 10,000 additional job cuts by 2007
July 21, 2005, Rochester, NY--As part of the effort to accelerate its transformation to a profitably competitive business model for digital markets and to respond to a faster-than-expected decline in consumer film sales, Kodak is more aggressively pursuing goals announced in January 2004, in which the company set plans to reduce employment worldwide by as many as 15,000 positions by mid 2007.

Agilent, Asylum Research to develop nanotechnology techniques and applications
July 19, 2005, Palo Alto and Santa Barbara, CA--Agilent Technologies and Asylum Research have signed a joint development agreement to collaborate on technologies and applications in the area of nanotechnology measurements. Agilent is also making an equity investment in Asylum Research. Terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.
