• Nanophotonics market opportunities exceed $33 billion
  January 20, 2005, Mountain View, CA--Companies developing nanophotonic products are aiming collectively at opportunities worth over $30 billion in large displays and over $3 billion in other photonic applications, according to a new report from Strategies Unlimited.
• Former Burleigh employees start Bristol Instruments
  January 19, 2005, Victor, NY--Three former employees of Burleigh Instruments have formed Bristol Instruments, a new company that will design, manufacture, and market precision scientific instruments used in basic and applied research, engineering, and production test applications.
• Coherent to discontinue lithography product development
  January 17, 2005, Santa Clara, CA--Coherent says its Lambda Physik subsidiary is discontinuing future product development and investments in the semiconductor lithography market. Lambda will continue to support its installed lithography base.
• Sony expands LCD business with Chi Mei deal
  January 10, 2005, Tokyo, Japan--Sony plans to acquire the Japan-based liquid-crystal display (LCD) operations of Chi Mei Optoelectronics (Taiwan) for $176.2 million. Sony said the purchase would enable the production of up to 65,000 liquid crystal display panels per month, up from about 40,000 at present.
• Consumer applications boost laser sales 10% in '04
  January 6, 2005, Nashua, NH--Thanks in large part to a steady increase in consumer applications involving lasers and optoelectronics, the global market for all types of lasers grew 10% in 2004 over 2003 to reach $5.4 billion, according to the latest Laser Focus World market survey.

• China ministry says Corning did not dump fiber
  January 3, 2005, Corning, NY--Corning Inc. received a positive final determination from the Ministry of Commerce (MOC) of the People's Republic of China, Beijing, that affirmed the company's original position that it had not dumped standard single-mode optical fiber into the Chinese market.
