• Newport to sell robotic systems operations
  April 11, 2005, Irvine, CA--Newport Corporation plans to divest its robotic systems operations, which is not profitable and is no longer core to Newport's overall strategy, according to the company.
• SPIE Defense & Security Symposium shatters attendance records
  April 8, 2005, Orlando, FL--A wrap-up release for the Defense & Security Symposium & Exhibition by its sponsor, the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE), announced that total attendance increased 11% from last year to more than 5400 delegates, and the exhibition grew by some 13% to over 330 exhibitors. The Symposium was held in Orlando, FL from March 28 to April 1.
• Synova establishes subsidiary in Japan
  April 6, 2005, Lausanne, Switzerland--In a move to strengthen its presence within Asia, Synova has announced the opening of Synova Japan. The wholly-owned subsidiary will provide localized sales and support for the company's laser systems, which span the semiconductor, electronic, tooling, medical, automotive and energy industries.
• Laser Focus World ranks number 66 in B2B magazine's "Top 100 Trade Publications"
  April 5, 2005, Nashua, NH--Laser Focus World magazine ranks number 66 in B2B magazine's special report on top trade magazines by 2004 ad revenue ("Top Trades", March 14, 2005).
• Mississippi partnership to produce silicon carbide
  April 5, 2005, Pittsburgh, PA--II-VI Incorporated announced that it is partnering with SemiSouth Laboratories (Starkville, MS) and Mississippi State University (Mississippi State, MS) to establish a silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductor-substrate-manufacturing facility in Starkville.
• Report forecasts continuing growth for gallium nitride devices
  April 4, 2005, Mountain View, CA--Having achieved a worldwide device market of $3.2 billion in 2004, gallium nitride technology continues to be one of the biggest success stories in compound semiconductors, according to market research firm Strategies Unlimited.
• Axsys Technologies acquiring Diversified Optical Products
  March 25, 2005, Rocky Hill, CT--Axsys Technologies announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Diversified Optical Products (DiOP), a privately held manufacturer of high-end thermal surveillance camera systems and lenses, for US$60 million in cash.
• Transmode Systems and Lumentis announce merger
  March 24, 2005, Stockholm, Sweden--Transmode Systems and Lumentis have announced that they are merging to form a new company under the Transmode identity to further penetrate the growing Metro Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) global equipment market.
• Konarka and Evident announce research collaboration
  March 24, 2005, Lowell, MA, and Troy, NY--Konarka Technologies and Evident Technologies have announced a collaborative research effort to increase the sensitivity of plastic solar cells to a wider range of the light spectrum.
• NanoOpto capitalization climbs to $42.3 million
  March 23, 2005, Somerset, NJ--NanoOpto has closed on $12 million in Series C round venture financing. The total financing raised by NanoOpto to date is $42.3 million.
