    May 10, 2005, Shenzhen, Hong Kong--ZTE Corporation, China's largest listed telecommunications manufacturer, is to install Bulgaria's first dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM) network in a contract with Cabletel (Sofia, Bulgaria), a fixed-line operator.
  • Polychromix, Ocean Optics partner on NIR spectroscopy
    May 9, 2005, Wilmington, MA and Dunedin, FL--Polychromix, a developer of wavelength management solutions, and Ocean Optics signed a worldwide distribution agreement to market cost-effective spectroscopy solutions for general-purpose applications.
  • Lockheed Martin leads laser weapon development
    May 6, 2005, Sunnyvale, CA--Lockheed Martin has been selected by General Atomics (San Diego, CA) as weapon system integrator for the High Energy Liquid Laser Area Defense System (HELLADS). General Atomics' Photonics Division is under contract to the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop and demonstrate the lightweight, solid-state laser weapon system.
  • Dow Corning wins US Display Consortium OLED contract
    May 4, 2005, San Jose, CA--A new U.S. Display Consortium (USDC) R&D contract awarded to Dow Corning (Midland, MI) will focus on developing novel hole injection materials (HIM) for production of higher efficiency organic light emitting diode devices (OLED) suitable for high-definition displays. The USDC and Dow Corning will equally share the $2.39 million development cost.
  • SMIC and UTAC to establish semiconductor assembly and testing facility in China
    May 3, 2005, Shanghai, China--Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC; Shanghai, China) and United Test and Assembly Center Ltd (UTAC; Singapore) have entered into joint venture arrangements relating to the provision of semiconductor assembly and testing services in Chengdu, China, and will focus on memory and logic.
  • Gigaphoton shipping new excimer laser to ASML for lithography
    April 29, 2005, Oyama, Japan--Gigaphoton, a light source manufacturer for the semiconductor industry, has begun volume production and shipment of a new argon fluoride (ArF) excimer laser, the GT40A (emission wavelength 193 nm; repetition rate 4 kHz). This new model has already been tested and qualified for integration with lithography tools at ASML Holding NV (Veldhoven, The Netherlands).
  • Fabrinet to acquire JDSU facilities in Fuzhou, China
    April 28, 2005, San Francisco, CA--Fabrinet plans to purchase the JDS Uniphase (San Jose, CA) manufacturing facilities located in Fuzhou, China. Under terms of the arrangement, Fabrinet will acquire all assets and operations related to the Fuzhou plant, including R&D and the manufacture of products such as crystals and precision optics.
  • New Scale to make piezo motors for mobile-phone cameras
    April 26, 2005, Victor, NY--New Scale Technologies has created a new division, dubbed Mobacam, to develop and manufacture miniature piezoelectric motors for mobile phone cameras. The motors will move optics to achieve autofocus and optical zoom.

  • Berkeley Lab contract to stay with University of California
    April 20, 2005, Washington, DC--The Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded a new five-year contract to the University of California to manage and operate its Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL; Berkeley, CA). The award is the result of the first competition of the management and operating (M&O) contract for the laboratory since its inception. But the University of California was the only bidder for the DOE's December 15, 2004, request for proposal (RFP).
