  • CDT, Sumitomo Chemical form joint OLED venture
    June 1, 2005, Cambridge, England--Cambridge Display Technology (CDT) and Sumitomo Chemical have signed a memorandum of understanding to form a new joint venture company to develop and supply advanced polymer OLED (P-OLED) materials and formulated inks for use in commercial P-OLED display and lighting applications. The new company, to be based in Tokyo, Japan, will be owned equally by the two parent companies.
  • GE Global Research awarded second R&D contract from USDC
    May 27, 2005, San Jose, CA--The United States Display Consortium (USDC) recently signed a $1.96 million R&D contract with GE Global Research in Niskayuna, NY. The purpose of the cost-shared project is to transfer GE's graded barrier technology from a batch process to a roll-to-roll (R2R) process. The USDC (San Jose, CA) is a public/private partnership chartered with developing the flat panel display (FPD) industry supply chain.

  • FiberFest attendance stabilizes
    May 20, 2005, Chestnut Hill, MA--FiberFest 2005 was held in Boxborough, MA on May 2nd, and in Somerset, NJ on May 9th. Although attendance for Boxborough this year was similar to last year (450 attendees) and attendance for Somerset was down slightly (125 attendees in 2005 versus 200 in 2004), FiberFest chairperson Marjorie Katz from Optimark Fiber Optics (Chestnut Hill, MA) noted that the size of FiberFest was back to where it was in 1999 & 2000 prior to the short-lived telecom "boom".
  • SPIE joins 40 scientific societies in promoting visa reform
    May 19, 2005, Bellingham, WA--SPIE and 40 engineering, scientific and academic associations, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Association of American Universities, and the National Academy of Sciences has issued an updated list of recommendations for enhancing the U.S. visa system, urging the government to accelerate its effort to reform the visa process for international students, scholars, and researchers.

    May 11, 2005, Dalgety Bay, Scotland--Leslie G. Polgar is the new CEO of CRLO Displays. Previously, Polgar was the founding President of the Eastman Kodak Display Products business.
  • Cognex acquires DVT
    May 10, 2005, Natick, MA--Cognex Corporation, which supplies machine-vision systems, has acquired DVT Corporation (Duluth, GA), a privately held vision-sensor company. Cognex purchased all of the outstanding shares of DVT for approximately $115 million, consisting of a cash payment of $104 million made at the closing and a final payment of up to an additional $11 million in cash to be paid at the end of a one-year escrow period. The acquisition was completed on May 9.
