  • NASA Reviews Repairs by Simulating Zero Gravity
    Lake Forest, CA, February 5, 2004. NASA is using a 10-camera VICON optical motion capture solution to evaluate potential tile damage review and repair procedures for the Space Shuttles. The NASA's Anthropometry and Biomechanics Facility at Lyndon-Johnson Space Center has installed the system to track crew member and tool movement in a range of zero-gravity simulations to zone in on what maneuvers astronauts might safely and effectively perform outside the spacecraft.
  • Thermal Conductive Adhesive has 1:1 Mix Ratio
    Hackensack, NJ, February 4, 2004. Master Bond EP21AO is a two component, thermally conductive, electrically isolating epoxy adhesive with a forgiving 1 to 1 mix ratio by weight or volume. This compound is extremely versatile and will adhere well to variety of similar and dissimilar substrates. It has a low coefficient of expansion, low shrinkage and superb dimensional stability.   • LEOMA Goes Into 'Holding Pattern'
    San Jose, CA, February 2, 2004. After nearly 20 years as the North American laser industry's only industry trade group, the Laser and Electro-Optics Manufacturers' Association (LEOMA) is going into hibernation. The decision was made by the LEOMA board at a meeting held during Photonics West.
  • Newport Reports Losses Continue
    Irvine, CA, February 3, 2004. Newport has reported its financial results for the fourth quarter and year ended December 31, 2003. Sales for the fourth quarter of 2003 totaled $36.2 million, an increase of approximately 12% compared with the $32.4 million recorded in the fourth quarter of 2002. The company reported a loss from continuing operations for the fourth quarter of 2003 of $1.7 million, or $0.04 per share.

  • Court Rules for Cognex in Lemelson Case
    Las Vegas, January 27, 2004. The U.S. District Court in Las Vegas has issued a ruling in favor of Cognex in its lawsuit against the Lemelson Partnership. Chief Judge Philip Pro held that the claims of 14 patents asserted by the Lemelson Partnership are invalid and unenforceable, and not infringed by Cognex.   • NP Photonics Introduces Fiber Laser System
    Tucson, AZ, January 26, 2004. NP Photonics has introduced its latest generation Scorpion micro fiber laser system. The new Scorpion bench-top system features the same ultra-narrow line-width of its predecessor, yet now provides up to 150-mW of power across the C-band (1530 nm to 1565 nm), and includes an integrated Windows-based computer and large touch screen LCD display.
  • French Companies Invade Photonics West
    Chicago, January 22, 2004. At the initiative of Ubifrance, the French Agency for International Business Development, eleven French companies have joined forces to attend Photonics West in San Jose, January 27-29. Photonics West has become North America's largest exhibition on optics, lasers, biomedical optics, optoelectronic components, and imaging technologies.
