• Little Optics Develops Family of PLCs

These elements include on chip: Polarization beam splitters (splits TE and TM); Polarization combiners (combines TE and TM); Polarization rotators (rotates any input polarization by 90 degrees); and Polarization dependent phase shifters and delays
• JPSA Laser Offers UV Laser Marking Services
  Hollis, NH, February 18, 2004. JPSA Laser is now offering laser marking services on difficult materials such as glass, crystals, diamonds, sapphire, polymers, metals, and glass. UV excimer laser systems vaporize submicron layers of material to create a non-destructive permanent mark for non-contact marking applications that require minimal thermal damage to surrounding material or little disruption of surface finish.
• Sacher Lasertechnik Allies With Triad
  Marburg, Germany and Longmont, Co, February 13, 2004. Sacher Lasertechnik and Triad Technology agreed to form a strategic partnership with the goal to develop ultra-stable laser light sources based on stabilized external cavity diode lasers. Sacher Lasertechnik is a manufacturer of tunable high-power external cavity diode lasers with several patents on external cavity diode lasers as well as on performing antireflection coatings for diode lasers.

• Optical Modulator Market Growth Forecast
  San Mateo, CA, February 11, 2004. - According to a new market study by ElectroniCast, the use of optical communication modulators used with transmitters at rates of 10 Gbps led in relative market share value with 65.2 percent at $119 million in 2003. The use of modulators in 40 Gbps communication network links began to show very small but measurable quantities in 2003, as chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion problems were busily being addressed.
• Characterization of Passive Optical Devices
  Campinas, Brazil and San Jose, CA, February 10, 2004. FiberWork Optical Communications has released the OSPA (Optical S-Parameter Analyzer). The OSPA is a fast platform for full and accurate characterization of passive optical devices during R&D and production, such as Fiber Bragg Gratings, interference filters, AWG's, dispersion compensators, optical multiplexers and demultiplexers, short lengths of fiber, and photonic crystal fiber devices.
• Growth Seen in Long-Wavelength Lasers
  Mountain View, CA, February 9, 2004. The recovery in the telecom sector and growing use of 10 Gigabit optical links for enterprise and storage applications will drive steady growth in the long wavelength laser and transceiver market. However, 2004 will be critical for the suppliers, with well over 40 companies clamoring for orders spread among a dizzying number of new and existing segments, and surprisingly little consolidation in the hodge-podge of companies so far.
• ILDA's Brussels Meeting Honors Art and Technology
  Brussels, Belgium, January 5, 2004. It was the laser entertainment industry's equivalent of Hollywood's Oscar night: over a dozen companies from five nations were honored for artistic achievement during a gala celebration at the historic Le Plaza Theatre in Brussels last November.
• Precision Integrating Sphere for LED Measurements
  San Diego, February 6, 2004. Gamma Scientific has introduced the GS-IS12-TLS integrating sphere. Ideal for total luminous flux (lumens) and radiant flux (Watts) measurement of miniature and sub-miniature LEDs, and lamps emitting between 190- to 2700-nm, the GS-IS12-TLS lowers overall measurement uncertainty compared to typical integrating spheres.
