Cree to buy GaN substrate business from ATM
Durham, N.C., March 25, 2004--Cree has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the gallium nitride (GaN) substrate and epitaxy business of Advanced Technology Materials (Danbury, CT), through an asset purchase transaction. Under terms of the agreement, Cree will purchase the assets of the business, including related intellectual property, fixed assets and inventory, in exchange for cash.

BU Photonics Center moves forward with Nanophotonics Lab
Boston, MA, March 24, 2004--The Photonics Center at Boston University announced it has begun building a $1.5 million Nanophotonics Laboratory, scheduled to open this September. The facility will enable engineers and developers from different industries and areas of specialization to integrate advances in nanophotonics, nanobiosystems, and nano-electromechanical systems into application focused platforms.

USDC partners with Honeywell on night vision imaging
San Jose, CA, March 18, 2004--The U.S. Display Consortium (USDC) awarded a research and development contract to Honeywell's Defense and Space business (Albuquerque, NM). The $233,000 award will focus on evaluating military night vision imaging systems (NVIS) to provide recommendations to the Department of Defense for modifications to relevant military standards.

Michigan Aerospace wins $2.1 million LIDAR contract
Ann Arbor, MI, March 23, 2004--Michigan Aerospace Corporation (MAC) received a $2.1 million, two-year contract from the University of New Hampshire as part of a larger grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to demonstrate its proprietary ground-based light detection and ranging (LIDAR) system (GroundWinds) for measurement of high altitude winds from a platform looking down on the atmosphere (BalloonWinds).
