• Bookham appoints new senior VP
  Oxfordshire, England, April 8, 2004--Bookham Technology, a provider of optical and RF components, modules, and subsystems, appointed Conrad Burke as senior vice president of their worldwide sales organization.
• Pat Edsell named President and CEO of NP Photonics
  Tucson, Arizona, April 6, 2004--NP Photonics, a developer and manufacturer of micro fiber products for sensing and scientific applications, has appointed industry veteran Pat Edsell president and CEO, replacing former president and CEO Charles Chandler.
• Laser Focus World seeks an associate technical editor

• Moritex to rep Sagitta equipment in Japan
  Hauppauge, New York, April 6, 2004--Sagitta, a supplier of automated polishing and inspection equipment for fiberoptic components and connectors, has formed a strategic partnership with Moritex Corporation of Japan.
• Thorlabs buys Melles Griot division
  Newton, NJ and Carlsbad, CA, April 2, 2004--Thorlabs has purchased Melles Griot Ltd. (Cambridgeshire, England), a division of Melles Griot ( Carlsbad CA). The UK facility manufactures nano-positioning systems for high precision alignment applications, along with optical tables and full vibration isolation systems.
• Fujitsu and Sumitomo form optical-component joint venture
  San Jose, California, April 2, 2004--Fujitsu Quantum Devices Limited and the Electron Device Department of Sumitomo Electric Industries have consolidated their compound semiconductor device businesses into a joint venture company, Eudyna Devices.
• OptiLED partners with California Lighting Technology Center
  Irvine, CA, March 30, 2004--As a way to more quickly bring the latest energy-saving light emitting diode (LED) lighting concepts to consumers and businesses, OptiLED is partnering with the California Lighting Technology Center (CLTC) on a number of development and demonstration projects.
• Medical-laser firm Cutera launches IPO
  Brisbane, CA, March 30, 2004--Medical-laser manufacturer Cutera (formerly Altus Medical) has done something the laser industry hasn't seen for a while now: launched an initial public offering. The company and its stockholders are offering 3,532,000 shares of common stock at $14/share.
• BAE Systems unveils new laser center
  Edinburgh, Scotland, March 30, 2004--A new Laser Center of Excellence has been opened at BAE Systems Avionics Group Sensor Systems Division (SSD) facility (Edinburgh, Scotland). The new facility will be used in the production of the Laser System for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) Electro Optical Targeting System (EOTS) following the award of a contract to BAE Systems Avionics Group by Lockheed Martin in September 2003.
• Raytheon awarded laser-guided bomb contract
  Tucson, AZ, March 30, 2004--Raytheon Company has been awarded the maximum available share of three competitive contracts for Paveway II Laser Guided Bomb (LGB) components by the U.S. Air Force. The contracts include a 70% share of the fiscal year 2004 LGB procurements for the Air Force and Navy for $116 million plus 100% of a stand-alone contract to provide front-end guidance units to the Air Force
