  • Silicon Bandwidth Relocates HQ to San Jose
    San Jose, CA August 25, 2003. Silicon Bandwidth, Inc. (SBI) has relocated its corporate headquarters to San Jose, Calif. Chief Executive Officer Ajit Medhekar stated that the move will mean a much more convenient location for the company in the very heart of Silicon Valley.
  • Avanex to Acquire Assets of Vitesse's Optical Division
    FREMONT, Calif., August 22, 2003. Avanex has entered into an agreement to acquire certain assets of Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation's Optical Systems Division located in San Jose, Calif. Under the terms of the agreement, Avanex will acquire substantially all of the assets of Vitesse's Optical Systems Division in exchange for approximately 1.2 million shares of Avanex common stock. As of August 19, 2003, the transaction has a value of approximately $6 million.
  • Koncent Announces Patent of Isolator
    Fuzhou Fujian, China, August 21, 2003. Koncent Communication, Inc., a fiberoptic component manufacturer and one-stop source for all kinds of isolators, has been awarded US patent 20030048912 for a two-stage optical isolator with simplified assembly process and improved performance.
  • KMI Conference To Focus On Developing Markets
    Providence, RI, August 20, 2003. From Sept. 29 - October 1, KMI will host its 26th annual Newport (RI) Conference on Fiberoptics Markets (NCFM). A new development at this year's conference will be the addition of a components track on the last day. This components track has been organized by KMI's sister company, Strategies Unlimited.
  • Symposium On EMCCD Technology Announced
    Belfast, Northern Ireland, August 18, 2003. The first-ever gathering to focus on the application and development of Electron Multiplying CCD (EMCCD) technology is to be held in Ireland from 5-7 September 2003. Hosted by Queen's University, Belfast, the event will look at who is using the technology, which applications it suits, what its limitations are, what its future holds and what plans there are for cameras using EMCCD technology.

Spectra-Physics has announced a major expansion of their operations in China with the creation of a new subsidiary that now provides in-country sales, service and support from its Beijing headquarters.   • New Wave Awarded Patent for Sapphire Scribing
    Fremont, Calif., August 8, 2003. - New Wave Research has been awarded United States patent 6,580,054 for its method of scribing sapphire substrates. The patent covers scribing sapphire substrates using solid-state UV lasers. More than 50 items are claimed, including all the hardware configurations, processes and parameters used in the company's AccuScribe sapphire wafer scribing systems
  • DMG Acquires Demeter Module Group From Finisar
    Los Angeles, CA, August 7, 2003. DMG Technologies Inc. was formed recently to acquire the assets and IP rights of Demeter Module Group from Finisar Corp. The purchase was privately funded. DMG Technologies designs and manufactures optical subassemblies, including laser/PIN diodes and detectors, as well as bi-directional and combiner devices.
  • SPIE Digital Library Launched
    Bellingham, WA, August 6, 2003. SPIE-The International Society for Optical Engineering launched its Digital Library on 1 August 2003. The new SPIE Digital Library, available online at spiedl.org, is a comprehensive tool that provides researchers around the globe with unprecedented instant access to SPIE proceedings and journal papers.
