  • Electronics Waste: Global Mandates 2003
    Dublin, Ireland, December 23, 2003. There are an estimated 62 million computers expected to be junked in 2003 -- three times the number that became obsolete in 1999. The E-waste issue has moved into prominence in the last few years, in part because the environmentalists have been able to gain major media attention to the issue. In California and Massachusetts, cathode ray tubes are banned from landfills. Maine and Minnesota recently banned CRTs from landfills as well.
  • MKS Establishes Shanghai Office
    Andover, MA, December 22, 2003, MKS Instruments has opened a new Shanghai office to expand local support in China. The office includes a calibration center and spare parts warehouse and has provisions for customer training. Technical sales staff at the new office provides sales, service, and support for all MKS products in China. Garret Lin, General Manager MKS Instruments (Shanghai), directs the operations of the office.
  • ASL Acquires Rights to EyeTrace
    Bedford, MA, December 18, 2003. Applied Science Laboratories (ASL) has acquired the rights to the advanced eye tracking line developed by IOTA AB (formerly Permobil Meditech, makers of the ober2, high speed recording system), a Swedish company. IOTA AB EyeTrace technology was developed and enhanced by international teams of scientists and engineers with the leadership and guidance of Dr. Per Udden a Swedish physician, businessman, inventor and scientist.
  • Survey Shows 15% Revenue Growth in 2003
    Nashua, NH, December 17, 2003. The laser industry experienced a 15% revenue increase in 2003 over 2002 to reach $4.9 billion, according to the latest Laser Focus World marketplace survey. The factors fueling this and other trends in the laser and optoelectronics market will be discussed in detail at the annual Laser Focus World Marketplace Seminar, to be held January 26, 2004, in San Jose, CA during Photonics West
  • Spectra-Physics Forms New Strategic Marketing Group
    Mountain View, CA, December 16, 2003. Spectra-Physics has announced the creation of a new Strategic Marketing group whose task will be to define market-driven business strategies for long-term, profitable growth. The group will focus on four key market segments: microelectronics, industrial manufacturing, medical/biotechnology, and research. In addition to identifying product and market opportunities in these areas, the group will also pursue strategic partnerships and acquisitions.
  • FEINFOCUS X-ray Inspection Pays Off for Raytheon
    Stamford, CT, December 15, 2003. FEINFOCUS, manufacturers of real-time X-ray inspection systems, recently completed a custom installation for Raytheon's Reliability Analysis Laboratory (RAL), in Lexington, Mass. Raytheon selected FEINFOCUS to create a tailored real-time X-ray inspection facility to perform a variety of services for Raytheon and its customers.
  • New Wave Research Expands in China
    Fremont, CA, December 12, 2003. New Wave Research has opened an office in Shanghai, China. The new office provides support and service for the company's products, including laser systems for LED, flat panel display and semiconductor manufacturing. The Shanghai office becomes the company's third office in Asia - others are located in Taiwan and Japan.
  • OSA Honors Achievements In Optical Engineering
    Washington DC, December 11, 2003. Four leaders in the field of optical engineering were given the prestigious 2003 Engineering Excellence Awards by The Optical Society of America (OSA). OSA made the presentations at its annual meeting, "Frontiers in Optics," in Tucson, Arizona in October 2003. The winners are Paul R. Dumas, QED Technologies; Alan H. Gnauck, Bell Laboratories; Mark E. Lowry, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories and L. Ramdas Ram-Mohan, Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
  • DOD Extends Sensors Unlimited's Contract For IR Camera
    Princeton, NJ, December 10, 2003. Sensors Unlimited has received a follow-on, Phase 1b contract from the USAF, for a 12-month, $2 million program to develop a high frame rate camera for combined imaging and ranging, using an in-pixel digitized, monolithic PIN/APD focal plane array. The Department of Defense Missile Defense Agency is providing the funding under a contract managed by the Air Force.
  • OEwaves Chooses Agilent to Package Photonics Devices
    Palo Alto, CA, December 9, 2003. OEwaves, a manufacturer of ultra-low phase noise, high-frequency signal sources and related components, has chosen Agilent's photonics manufacturing facility in Boeblingen, Germany, to package and manufacture OEwaves' patented fixed-tuned optoelectronic oscillators (OEOs). Agilent and OEwaves also announced that they will collaborate in the development of future OEOs.
