• Toshiba optical devices enable Dolby Digital in DVD players
  The devices enable Dolby Digital Surround Sound and Sony DTS in set-top boxes, DVD players, game consoles and other consumer electronics devices.
• Laser spectrometers detect ammonia
  According to Fraunhofer scientists, the use of quantum cascade lasers allows designing measurement systems that are cheaper and more compact than conventional lasers since they only need a tiny Peltier cooling element.
• Hitachi Denshi America unveils megapixel near-IR camera
  Hitachi has eliminated the infrared cut filter in this black-and-white camera and designed the CCD so that it has a considerably higher output than a standard CCD at wavelengths of 900 nanometers and higher. According to company management, the KP-F120 will detect minute temperature differences on anything from agricultural products such as produce and beef to human tissue to industrial furnaces.
• ESI introduces UV laser micromachining system
  The Model 2700 laser micromachining system from Electro Scientific Industries is designed for dicing wafers and drilling vias in silicon wafers with high accuracy. The dicing capability is specifically aimed at the manufacture of silicon-based array waveguide gratings (AWGs) and microelectromechancial (MEMS) devices.
• Coherent introduces all-solid-state 460-nm blue laser
  Designed to enable a new generation of digital imaging systems, inspection systems, and bio-instrumentation, the Sapphire laser is free from limitations associated with the air-cooled argon-ion lasers currently used in those applications. The Sapphire laser is 90% smaller, consumes 98% less power, and dissipates 98% less heat than a comparable air-cooled argon-ion laser.
• Corona Announces World?s First OC-768 VSR Transmitters and Receivers
  Corona?s modules feature a throughput of 40 Gbit/s in a 13 x 13-mm BGA package?roughly the size of a dime?which reportedly makes them the smallest parallel devices available.
• Burleigh Instruments Introduces Precision Photonics Alignment System
  The FR-3000 system incorporates Burleigh?s patented Inchworm technology to provide six automated degrees of freedom, high resolution, and long travel in a single stage. The combination of 0.1-nm resolution and 25 mm of travel is reportedly a vast improvement over systems that rely on cumbersome coarse/fine dual-stage designs.

  Codeon?s 12.5 Gb/s Intensity Modulator Chosen for the MultiWave CoreStream OC-192 Transceivers.
• Hitachi Denshi introduces PC-controlled high-res camera
  The high-resolution, progressive-scan camera, which affords PC control via an RS-232C port, is equipped with an analog and digital output, making it applicable in a variety of machine vision and precision measurement applications.
• Newport offers fast steering mirrors for optical systems
  the new technology offers two-axis, high bandwidth tip/tilt motion with better than one-microradian resolution.
