Alpes offers CW and pulsed quantum cascade lasers

Neuchâtel, Switzerland, April 19, 2004--Alpes Lasers has developed a line of semiconductor quantum cascade lasers operating across the mid-infrared spectrum from 3.5 to 17 µm. These devices operate near room temperature (RT), resist damage from temperature cycling, are stable and are available for pulsed or continuous-wave operation. Total system power consumption is small and the lasers are based on widely used material and technology (InP, MBE).

Products include RT continuous-wave Fabry-Pérot devices, RT continuous-wave single mode devices, RT pulsed single mode devices, and cryogenic continuous-wave single mode devices. Applications include chemical sensing, medical diagnostics, remote sensing, and
telecommunications.

According to the company, because quantum cascade lasers are unipolar and do not have electron-hole re-combinations, the result is robust devices with high operating temperatures. In addition, the cascading scheme allows one electron to emit many photons, which means increased optical power.
