Fiber prep and fusion splicing system is fully automated
The Presta system, introduced by kSARIA Corp. (Wilmington, MA) at this week's Fiberoptics Automation Expo in Chicago, is reportedly the industry's first fully automated fiber prep and fusion splicing system for fiberoptic module assembly. The new system strips, cleans, cleaves, splices, recoats, and proof-tests up to 40 fibers in a single pass in just one minute per splice with no operator intervention. By packaging the fibers on bar-coded pallets, users can track each fiber's location, process state, and performance quality.
“As the industry moves toward deployment of a metropolitan fiberoptic network, the development of high-performance, low-cost optical modules is critical,” notes kSARIA VP Jim McEleney. “The only way to achieve this production goal is to rethink the entire optical module assembly process.” According to McEleney, the Presta system can replace up to 15 operators, as well as the associated benchtop prep and splicing tools.
