Wiring systems maker acquires FiberTech

Leoni (Nuremberg, Germany), a wire, cable, and wiring systems specialist, is further expanding its activity in the high-growth market for fiber optics by acquiring 90.2% of the shares in FiberTech (Berlin, Germany). FiberTech is a provider of special glass fibers and complete fiber-optic systems for medical equipment and industrial applications. The fiber-optics unit will now be able to offer a product range to cover widely differing applications along each link in the value chain: from the fiber to the cables and the related components, and through to designing and setting up glass-fiber cable networks.

Court finds in favor of JDSU executives

A jury ruled in favor of JDSU (Milpitas, CA) on all claims in a securities class-action lawsuit filed by Connecticut Retirement Plans and Trust Funds against the company in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California (Oakland, CA). The class-action lawsuit, originally filed in 2002, claimed that company executives misrepresented the financial health of the company to shareholders, resulting in the loss of millions of dollars. The jury returned its verdict after two days of deliberation, following a four-week trial. “We are extremely gratified by the jury’s verdict, as we have always believed that the plaintiffs’ claims were without merit,” said Kevin Kennedy, JDSU president and CEO.

Sterlite to double fiber manufacturing capacity

India’s only global provider and integrated manufacturer of optical fiber-Sterlite Technologies (Pune, India)-will double its optical-fiber annual manufacturing capacity to 12 million km from its current capacity of 6 million km. This expansion, at the company’s existing facilities at Aurangabad, India, is expected to commence by June 2009.

Sterlite said it is in advanced stages of discussion with leading global manufacturing equipment and raw material suppliers to streamline its effort towards the expansion project milestones. The expanded capacity would primarily cater to the growing demand from the Indian market and also enable the company to grow its global market share.

Oplink acquires remainder of OCP

Oplink Communications (Fremont, CA), provider of photonic components, modules, and subsystems, completed the acquisition of the remaining 42% of outstanding common stock of Optical Communication Products (OCP; Woodland Hills, CA) that it did not already own, by means of a merger between OCP and a wholly owned subsidiary of Oplink. As a result of the merger, OCP becomes a wholly owned subsidiary of Oplink. Pursuant to the merger, Oplink will pay $1.65 per share, or approximately $80 million in the aggregate, to former holders of the 42% of OCP common stock not held by Oplink. “We look forward to integrating OCP with Oplink and being able to provide our combined customer base a broader product portfolio of offerings,” said Joe Liu, president and CEO of Oplink.

Photop builds vertical telecom-component line

Photop Technologies (Fujian, China), a component supplier and leading manufacturer of fiber-optics communications, projection and display, and photonics products, entered into an agreement to acquire Optimal Coatech (OPDM).

OPDM is a professional coating company in China that has the full capability from design, prototyping, volume production, to product inspection and testing, with product lines coverings telecom wavelength-division multiplexer filters, fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) filters, and infrared cutoff filters.

“This acquisition is one important step to further enhance our capability of vertically integrated manufacturing in photonics components and modules,” said John Ling, CEO of Photop. “This investment also affirms our commitment to actively pursue growth opportunities through acquisitions, and will boost Photop’s market position in telecom and consumer electronics. We are confident that this acquisition will benefit Photop customers.”
