Burlingame, CA--The IEEE Photonics Conference 2012 (IPC-2012), to take place September 23–27 in Burlingame (San Francisco Bay area), will feature an IEEE Photonics Society Graduates Of The Last Decade (GOLD) Session—an opportunity for graduate students and young professionals to interact with peers, take part in GOLD-organized activities, and establish connections in the photonics community. The session is one of many events scheduled for Sunday, September 23.

Held every autumn, the IEEE Photonics Conference gathers scientists and engineers in the areas of lasers, optoelectronics, optical fiber networks, and associated lightwave technologies, as well as other photonics applications. More than 500 technical papers will be presented, along with compelling plenary talks on the industry's most important issues, weekend events, and a product exhibition.

Papers are still being accepted for presentation at the conference. The paper submission deadline is May 11, and papers will be accepted beginning April 6. Authors will be notified by June 22 of the status of their paper. The complete Call for Papers can be found at http://www.ipc-ieee.org/call-for-papers.

Also planned as part of the Sunday events is a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the semiconductor laser, which was first made in 1962 by Robert Hall and his associates at the General Electric Co. laboratories (Schenectady, NY).
