Optelian acquires optical modulator maker Versawave

Ottawa, ON, Canada and Marietta, GA--Optelian acquired Versawave Technologies, a maker of ultrahigh bandwidth gallium-arsenide-based optical modulators.

Ottawa, ON, Canada and Marietta, GA--Optical communications transport systems company Optelian acquired Versawave Technologies (Vancouver, BC, Canada), a maker of ultrahigh bandwidth gallium-arsenide-based optical modulators with patented polarization modulation technology. Optelian says that the acquisition allows it to broaden its markets, extend technical leadership, and strengthen its client services through product development in the field of optical communications, worldwide.

"Our acquisition of Versawave is very much a part of our core strategy of continuing to manufacture in North America and being as vertically integrated as possible to provide our customers with very cost effective solutions and short lead times," said Optelian's CEO, David Weymouth.

A recent study from market research firm Infonetics Research says that operators have a strong preference for deploying 100 Gbps technology as they upgrade their networks.

Versawave, led by Hiroshi Kato, will continue to operate at its current Vancouver facility as a division of Optelian. Kato stressed that the "synergy with Optelian will enable Versawave to expand manufacturing, accelerate the making of new products and enhance customer support."

The Optelian LightGAIN product family is based on a scalable, modular, affordable, reliable, transport (SMART) architecture. Since 2002, Optelian’s portfolio of optical solutions has enabled telecom, multi-service operator (MSO), utility, and enterprise customers to expand their fiber capacity so they can increase revenue, cost-effectiveness, and efficiency. The company’s sales, marketing, and service operations are located in Marietta, GA, with in-house development and manufacturing based in Ottawa, ON, Canada.
