Jansen and Labroille win top ECBO student paper prizes for excellence in biomedical optics research

Bellingham, WA--SPIE and the Optical Society, along with ThorLabs and Toptica Photonics honored student researchers for biomedical excellence at the recent ECBO conference in Munich.

Bellingham, WA--Sponsoring societies SPIE and the Optical Society (Washington, DC) along with ThorLabs (Newton, NJ) and Toptica Photonics (Munich, Germany and Victor, NY) honored student researchers for biomedical optics excellence in their presentations at the recent European Conferences on Biomedical Optics (ECBO) in Munich. The Best Student Paper Prizes were awarded by Toptica and First Place went to Krista Jansen, et al., (Erasmus MC) for "Intravascular photoacoustic imaging of human coronary atherosclerosis" (8090-18). The Runner-up was Guillaume Labroille (Ecole Polytechnique), et al., for "Time-multiplexed two-photon microscopy using broadband shaped femtosecond pulses" (8086-24).

In addition to the Best Student Paper Prizes, Toptica Best Student Poster Prizes went to Daniel Fiole (Institut de RechercheBiomédicale des Armées) for "Multimodal 4D imaging of cell-pathogen interactions in the lungs provides new insights into pulmonary infections" (8086-43) and Thomas Klein (Ludwig-Maximilians-Univ. München) for "Towards multi-megahertz retinal OCT: wavelength swept 1050nm FDML laser at up to 3.1MHz repetition rate" (8091-55).

Thorlabs awarded the Best Student Paper/Poster Prize, for a student from a developing nation, to Lasma Asare (Univ. of Latvia), et al., for "Multispectral photoplethysmography technique for parallel monitoring of pulse shapes at different tissue depths " (8087-85).

And finally, the SPIE Travel Grant was awarded to Robert H. Wilson (Univ. of Michigan), for "Optical spectroscopy for quantitative sensing in human pancreatic tissues" (8087-36) and The Optical Society Travel Grant, for a student from a developing nation, went to Andriy Tomin (Institute of Cell Biology) for "Novel assay for direct fluorescent imaging of sialidase activity" (8087-69).

ECBO Session Chairs Irene Georgakoudi (Tufts Univ.) and Peter Andersen (Technical Univ. of Denmark) presented the awards. The students' outstanding papers were among more than 450 technical presentations at ECBO. The event was co-located with LASER World of PHOTONICS.
