CLEO unites the field of lasers and electro-optics by bringing together all aspects of laser technology. A comprehensive technical research program features hundreds of scientific sessions covering hot topic areas such as photonics for brain mapping, molecular imaging, high-power lasers, nanophotonics, optofluidics, nonlinear optics, and quantum optics, among others.

CLEO:2014 will host two Plenary Sessions featuring keynote addresses. On Tuesday, June 10, at 8:15 a.m., Gerhard Rempe of the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics (Munich, Germany) will speak about "Quantum Coherent Networks", followed by Larry A. Coldren of the University of California, Santa Barbara, who will present on "Photonic Integrated Circuits as Key Enablers for Datacom, Telecom and Sensor Systems". And on Wednesday, June 11, David Payne of the University of Southampton in England will give his address on "Fibers and the Future".

This year, the event will feature 15 Special Symposia covering topics such as neurophotonics, photonics for miniaturization, silicon photonic integration, and laser processing for consumer electronics and nanobiophotonics, as well as a Special Symposium in Memory of James Gordon and the Howard Schlossberg Retirement Symposium.

In addition to the 250 participating exhibitors on the exhibit floor, the CLEO: Expo (June 10-12) will provide programming that highlights business trends and market applications: CLEO: Market Focus (June 10-11), which will focus on the latest trends in the photonics marketplace; the CLEO: Expo Tech Playground (June 10-12), which will feature hands-on demonstrations from select CLEO: Expo exhibitors; and the Technology Transfer Program (June 12), which will debut a Pitch Panel for entrepreneurs to showcase their technology, explain why it is valuable, and discuss the next steps to commercialization, as well as continue to provide a tutorial for those that want to learn more about the licensing process.

Attendees walking the CLEO: Expo floor may not be able to see each and every technology presented by the 250 exhibitors, but the following list represents a good cross-section of what you can expect to see:

Aurea Technology to showcase twin-photon source at CLEO:2014

Edmund Optics to debut variable beam expander, showcase beam combiners and systems at CLEO:2014

EOT to showcase fiber laser isolators, high-speed photodetectors at CLEO:2014

Gentec-EO to show detector and meter combo at CLEO:2014

KMLabs to debut tabletop coherent EUV source at CLEO:2014

Ocean Optics to display high-res spectrometer at CLEO:2014

Santec to introduce programmable optical filter at CLEO:2014

Spectra-Physics to display ultrafast lasers at CLEO:2014

Also, the CLEO: Applications & Technology program explores the intersection of academic research with product commercialization. Featured session talks include:

  • “Clinical Translation and Discovery with Near-infrared Fluorescence Lymphatic Imaging,” by John Rasmussen, University of Texas Health Science Center
  • “Real-time Epidural Anesthesia Guidance Using Optical Coherence Tomography Needle Probe” by Qinggong Tang, University of Maryland
  • “Method for Increasing the Operating Distance of MEMS LIDAR beyond Brownian Noise Limitation,” by Behnam Behroozpour, University of California, Berkeley
  • “Terahertz Reflectometry of Multi-layered Paint Thicknesses and Estimation of Particle Sizes” by Anis Rahman, Applied Research and Photonics Inc.
  • “Optical Coherence Imaging of Microvascular Oxygenation and Hemodynamics” by Shau Poh Chong, University of California, Davis

The CLEO: Science & Innovations program covers applied research and innovations in lasers, optical materials, and photonic devices. Hot topics to be covered this year include laser processing of materials, terahertz technologies, high-field and ultrafast optics, and biophotonics. A featured session talk includes:

  • “Overview and On-orbit Performance of the Lunar Laser Communication Demonstration Uplink,” by Mark Stevens, MIT Lincoln Laboratory
  • “3-D Visualization of Dental Anatomy in Ancient Fossil Vertebrates by Using Third Harmonic Generation Microscopy,” by Yu-Cheng Chen, National Taiwan University, Taiwan

Finally, the Quantum Electronics and Laser Science (CLEO: QELS) program is a venue for discussion of fundamental research in optical and laser physics-related areas. More recent additions include fields such as quantum information science, nanophotonics, and metamaterials. A featured session talk includes:

  • “Hand-Held Plasmonic Biosensor for High-Throughput Sensing for Point-of-Care Applications,” by Arif E. Cetin, Boston University and EPFL, Switzerland
