Rockley Photonics (London, England), a start-up aimed at developing silicon photonics for data-communications networks, has closed its Series A funding round following what the company says is "high levels of investor interest."

Rockley Photonics was founded by a team that includes Andrew Rickman, who previously founded Bookham Technology in the UK and more recently acted as chairman of the well-known silicon-photonics specialist Kotura Inc. (Monterey Park, CA). According to Rockley Photonics, investor groups achieved more than a ten times return from Bookham Technology's Nasdaq IPO and four times from Kotura Inc.'s trade sale.

The funds secured from the Series A round will be used for a number of product development and growth efforts, including the expansion of the Rockley Photonics' engineering team in Pasadena, California.

"There is strong demand in the market for the speed and integration capabilities that silicon photonics can provide and we aim to apply our experience to enable accelerated adoption of higher bandwidth networks for a faster and more productive internet experience," says Rickman.
