Billerica, MA--Developer and manufacturer of high-light-output Big Chip LEDs and LED systems products Luminus Devices signed a merger agreement with LED components maker Lightera Corporation (Sunnyvale, CA). Lightera is a wholly owned U.S. affiliate of San'an Optoelectronics of Xiamen, China.

Luminus will operate as an independent business unit and subsidiary of Lightera. The business will operate with added and expanded capability, financial backing, and access to a world-leading operating company, all coupled with a global R&D team focused on enabling the lighting world with LED technology (http://www.laserfocusworld.com/articles/2013/05/doe-report-estimates-savings-for-use-of-leds-in-common-lighting-.html). Luminus will continue to focus on specialty markets (http://www.laserfocusworld.com/articles/2012/12/nasa-sleep-leds-for-iss.html) and applications for its current and expanding product as well as customer portfolios.

The companies say that in the merger, Luminus gains access to an advanced R&D operation in California as well as the overall technical strength of Sanan’s Corporate R&D Technical Center that provides Luminus a very large footprint for global expansion in specialty markets like projection display, medical, transportation, ultraviolet (http://www.laserfocusworld.com/articles/2013/06/deep-uv-leds-preserve-strawberries-.html), and general lighting markets and applications.

"Luminus has been searching for the right partner that would add to our extensive intellectual property, allow for expansion of our global operations and would be additive to our market-leading position in many segments of the worldwide specialty lighting market," said Keith T.S. Ward, president and CEO of Luminus Devices. “This relationship with Lightera and Sanan will allow us to expand our capabilities through new access to technical and financial resources well beyond our current position.”

"As a leader in the specialty lighting market, Luminus Devices provides us with proven, state-of-the-art technology that will allow Lightera to expand both our U.S. and international offerings," said Decai Sun, chairman and CEO of Lightera. "We expect Luminus to continue to focus on new technology, specialty lighting markets, applications and superior customer service."

Luminus has more than 151 patents/patents pending worldwide, and says its revolutionary Big Chip LED technology enables new markets for solid-state lighting.

Lightera Corporation is a Silicon Valley company focusing on the design and development of advanced LED components and system products for lighting applications. Lightera’s team has broad experience in LED epitaxial materials, chip/package design, and lighting systems.

San'an Optoelectronics engages in the research and development, production, and marketing of LED epitaxial products and chips.
