Mountain View, CA--Fiber laser manufacturer Mobius Photonics was granted a United States patent number 8,160,113 entitled "Tailored Pulse Burst" for a fiber laser optical system. Mobius produces short-pulsed fiber laser sources in the infrared, ultraviolet, and visible wavelengths.
The patent covers a unique optical system that can produce user-specified bursts of laser pulses tailored in pulse heights, pulse widths, and pulse spacings. Unlike some technologies, the system does not require an acousto-optic modulator or internal Q-switch. The invention has particular relevance for applications requiring a simple laser system that produces consistent, high-quality pulse bursts that can be customized for different processes. Potential applications range from high-pulse-energy materials processing to laser direct imaging and solar panel processing.
"We're pleased to announce that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has granted us the 'tailored pulse burst' patent," said Kiyomi Monro, Mobius CEO. "Using this technology, we are able to offer laser systems with flexible design and output capabilities. These unique systems could allow us to expand into a wider application space than we currently serve."
Founded in 2005, Mobius Photonics produces fiber-based laser sources for applications ranging from material processing for solar cell manufacturing, semiconductor fabrication and assembly, and flat panel display manufacturing, to scientific uses such as super-resolution microscopy.
