TeraXion and the Canadian Photonic Fabrication Center sign strategic partnership to develop InP modulators

Sept. 13, 2013
TeraXion and the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) have formed a strategic partnership that TeraXion says will lead to the development and fabrication of a new family of modulator products developed by TeraXion.

Quebec City, QC, Canada--TeraXion and the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) have formed a strategic partnership that TeraXion says will lead to the development and fabrication of a new family of modulator products developed by TeraXion. In addition, it will cover the company's next-generation indium phosphide (InP) high-speed modulators for coherent transmission systems at 100 Gbit/s and beyond, says TeraXion. Work will take place at NRC’s Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre (Ottawa, ON).

The form factor of the new modulator will be ten times smaller than the competing technologies available today, says Ian Woods, vice-president of the InP platform at TeraXion. “The Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre’s proven track record for bringing products to a commercialization level has been a key factor in our decision to rely on this partner,” adds Alain-Jacques Simard, TeraXion's president and CEO.

Among the catalysts for this TeraXion-NRC partnership are the close geographical location of both partners and the strong photonics ecosystem present in the Ottawa region, according to TeraXion.

The Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre provides engineering and manufacturing services, commercial grade prototyping, and pilot-run production facilities for III-V semiconductors.
