Jenoptik's JOLD-120-CPNN-1L passively cooled laser diode exhibits 30% improved cooling efficiency using the new air-cooled CN heat sinks when compared to available standard laser diodes. Lower demands on the cooling system make it possible to increase the optical output power up to 25%, increase operating temperature, or prolong lifetime. The laser diode reaches optical output power up to 120 W in continuous mode; collimation is possible. It achieves optical output power of 100 W in continuous operation from a fiber with a 400 μm core diameter and 0.22 NA (an alternative is increased power to 140 W with passive cooling by means of industrial water).

New passively cooled diode laser with optimized heat sink design

The Diode Lasers business unit of Jenoptik’s Lasers & Material Processing division was presenting at LASER 2009 trade show a new passively cooled diode laser, the JOLD-120-CPNN-1L, with optimized heat sink design.

Outstanding is the around 30% improved cooling efficiency of this laser using the new CN heat sinks when compared to the currently available standard diode lasers on the market. The diode has a cooling efficiency similar to that of those using micro-channel heat sinks. There is thus the possibility of combining a highly simplified construction with low demands on the cooling system to increase the optical output power of diode lasers by up to 25%, to increase operating temperature or to decisively prolong lifelime.

The diode laser reaches an optical output power of up to 120 watts in continuous mode. Optionally, a collimation of this laser is possible. The rights to this technical solution are protected through several patents. The start of series production is planned for the third quarter of 2009.

Additionally, this new development can be integrated into fiber-coupled diode laser modules such as the JOLD-100-CPXF-2P A with air cooling.

This module was originally unveiled at Photonics West in the USA and will be presented in Germany for the first time at the LASER trade show.

The truly special feature of this diode laser module with the integrated CN heat sinks is the fact that it is air cooled and requires no water or thermo-electric cooler whatsoever, which makes it much more user-friendly. It achieves an optical output power of 100 watts in continuous operation from a fiber with a core diameter of 400 µm and a numerical aperture of 0.22 (alternative: increased power to 140 watts with passive cooling by means of industrial water).

This fiber-coupled diode laser module can be used for direct material processing or for pumping solid-state and fiber lasers.
