3M technology enables 3-D viewing in handheld devices

July 21, 2009--3M (Saint Paul, MN) has developed a new optical film that enables mass adoption of three-dimensional (3-D) viewing in handheld devices. The 3M '3D Film' integrates into handheld displays and delivers autostereoscopic viewing for extended periods without eye fatigue. Special glasses are not required.

July 21, 2009--3M (Saint Paul, MN) has developed a new optical film that enables mass adoption of three-dimensional (3-D) viewing in handheld devices (see also "3-D displays transcend consumer novelty"). The 3M '3D Film' integrates into handheld displays and delivers autostereoscopic viewing for extended periods without eye fatigue. Special glasses are not required (see also "3-D precision views without special glasses").

The film provides a simple 3-D solution for handheld displays such as mobile phones, gaming devices, and other integrated handheld devices. In addition, it has broad application potential in electronic communications, entertainment, advertising, automotive, education and training, and scientific instruments.

The film integrates into the backlight module of an LCD display. Only one LCD panel is required, operating at a 120 Hz refresh rate. Backlight module assembly is nearly identical to existing systems, allowing for simple integration at the assembly stage. The usual optical film stack is replaced with a reflective film, custom light guide, and 3D Film. Through directional backlight technology, left and right images are focused sequentially into the viewer's eyes, allowing full resolution of the display panel. No precision registration during assembly is required.
