Photonic products and solutions provider OEwaves (Pasadena, CA) was awarded a contract to develop frequency agile band-pass and notch filters to support receiver systems for military and communication applications. The filter development builds upon OEwaves' proprietary photonics filter technology concept that provides wideband tunability.

Such agile filters enhance receiver system performances and reduce the total volume and power required by stringent military applications. The tunable microwave photonic filters are based on the patented technology of ultra-high quality (Q) factor crystalline whispering gallery mode (WGM) optical resonators. "The wide tuning range and high agility of OEwaves filters enhance performance and simplify receiver architectures," said Lute Maleki, president and CEO of OEwaves. "We are delighted to be providing this capability for military and communications systems."

The demand for a multi-pole widely tunable microwave photonic filter with similar performance parameters extends beyond miniature agile receiver system requirements and includes military and commercial microwave filter banks, radio emission detection, and other scientific instrumentation and test equipment.

OEwaves was founded in 2000 and has licensed the exclusive rights to over 20 patents and applications for the company's core technologies from the California Institute of Technology, which operates the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for NASA.
