March 4, 2008, San Francisco, CA--RED-C Optical Networks, a provider of integrated optical subsystems based on optical amplification and monitoring technology, and Proximion (Kista, Sweden), a provider of dispersion compensation solutions, announced their cooperation in promoting an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) design optimized to take advantage of the unique properties of dispersion-compensation module (DCM) technology.

The companies say that DCM technology based on fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) enjoys a number of advantages relative to conventional dispersion-compensating fiber (DCF) such as much reduced insertion loss, negligible optical delay, and high optical power tolerance. EDFAs optimized to take advantage of these properties offer significant cost savings and reduced footprint, as well as providing performance advantages with respect to noise figure and transient suppression. Combining Proximion's FBG-based DCM solutions with RED-C's amplifier designs provides an additional constructive step to fully exploit the advantages even further in improving cost/performance ratio.

"We are proud to cooperate with RED-C in their creative initiative to design optimized EDFA solutions," commented Stefan Ekman, Proximion CEO. "Our cooperation with RED-C marks the beginning of a trend utilizing our DCM solutions in the development of cost-effective, high-performing optical sub-systems for high capacity DWDM networks."
