Tyco Electronics Corp. (Harrisburg, PA) has reached an agreement to acquire Laser Diode Inc. (LDI; Edison, NJ), which will become part of the Tyco Electronics Fiber Optic Division. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, but the heads of both organizations made strong positive statements. "LDI serves the telecommunications, datacom, industrial, medical, and military markets with a range of advanced optoelectronics products and brings extensive packaging expertise," said Robert Leggett, vice president of the Tyco Fiber Optic Division. "These products are an excellent complement to our current line of active products."

Robert Williams, manager of product marketing in the fiber optics division, said that anticipated changes at LDI would be minimal and the focus for LDI after the acquisition will be on taking advantage of channels to market provided by Tyco Electronics, growing markets currently served by LDI (especially WDM system applications) and executing complementary rollouts of passive and active products in the future.—Hassaun Jones-Bey
